Jess Cross - A Portrait of Eric Dolphy
Stillness
A Portrait of Eric Dolphy
Original Pen and Ink on Paper | 8.5"x 11.5" | Framed
I painted this while listening to the album, Out to Lunch. There is something about that album that made me want to sit with Eric Dolphy and really look at him. I wanted to capture that stillness underneath all that sound.
I worked entirely with a single pen, building the image line by line through hatching and cross-hatching.
The texture in his sweater and hat, the weight of his hands, the way the light falls across his face. It all came from slowing down and listening.
This is a one of a kind original. I hope it finds a home where it is loved.
