Carve your own wax object, be it ring, pendant, or pocket trinket, and turn it to solid metal. In this class we explore the lost wax process, a process that uniquely allows for any geometry to be made.
During class, participants will learn the theory and process of lost wax casting while melting, carving, and shaping wax to create their original piece.
After class, the wax originals will be taken back to the studio to begin the casting process. Each piece will be attached to a “tree,” which acts as the pour gate for the molten metal to flow into the individual pieces. An investment mold is then created around the pieces while a vacuum is pulled through the material to prevent air pockets from forming. The mold is then burned out and fired to 1,350°F to cure the investment. Sterling silver is melted and poured into the cavity left behind by the wax. Once the metal has cooled, each piece is cut from the tree and polished, completing the casting process.
It is recommended that participants arrive having thought about what they would like to make. Hard carving wax and soft sculptable wax will be available for use during class.
The class includes 10 grams of sterling silver, which is enough material to create a simple, small ring. If a larger piece requires additional silver, the difference in weight will be charged separately.
Please allow approximately one and a half weeks for pieces to be cast, finished, and ready for pickup.
