This class is a hands-on blend of ocean sciences, phycology, and art education. We’ll be focusing on creating kelp prints with cyanotype; a camera-less photographic printing process. From A to Z— you’ll begin with learning the basic chemistry of cyanotyping, a quick study on Giant Kelp and other, minor species of Southern California, then print-making, and basic toning techniques. Archival paper, chemistry, and different kelp samples will be provided during the workshop. Students only need to bring a notebook, pen, and a curious mind!
For the paper nerds: we’ll be printing on 140g, hot-pressed cotton sheets with beveled edges. Size is 22x30 :) If you’d like to request a lighter paper-weight- please email the instructor 7 days in advance.
